What to look for in waterproof flooring for wet areas

Not all 'waterproof' claims are equal. A 100% waterproof core (common in hybrid planks) means the board itself won't swell or warp if water sits on it. Some ranges are listed simply as 'waterproof' or 'Yes' — these are still water-resistant but may have different core compositions, so always check the product page for detail before buying.

For bathrooms and laundries, a P3 slip rating is worth prioritising — it indicates the surface meets Australian standards for wet barefoot areas. Wear-layer thickness (measured in mm for vinyl and hybrid, or AC rating for laminate) tells you how resistant the surface is to scratches and scuffs over time; a 0.5mm or 0.7mm commercial wear layer is well suited to kitchen traffic. Thickness affects how rigid the plank feels underfoot and how well it bridges minor subfloor imperfections — 8mm or above is generally more forgiving.

Floating click vs direct-stick — which suits wet areas?

Most hybrid planks in this guide use a floating click-lock system: planks interlock and 'float' over the subfloor without adhesive. This is quicker to install and allows the floor to be lifted and relaid if needed. However, in very small bathrooms or laundries where movement could cause boards to shift, a direct-stick method (as used by Sanctuary and Lumina) can be more stable — the planks are glued directly to the prepared subfloor.

If you choose a floating floor for a bathroom, ensure all penetrations (around toilets and vanities) are properly sealed with silicone after install, as water ingress at edges — not through the plank itself — is the most common cause of issues. WFA supplies flooring only and does not provide installation services, so it's worth confirming the correct method with your chosen installer before ordering. Answers

Common questions

Can I use hybrid flooring in a bathroom or laundry?
Yes — all hybrid ranges in this guide are listed as waterproof and rated for wet areas. For bathrooms, look for a P3 slip rating (Seabreeze, Metro, Vista, Mirage and Sanctuary all carry this). Ensure edges and penetrations are sealed after installation, as water ingress at joins rather than through the plank is the more common issue.
Do I need to buy underlay separately for these floors?
It depends on the range. Metro and Seabreeze both have built-in acoustic underlay, so no separate purchase is needed. Mirage and Vista are listed with acoustic underlays 'to suit' — these would be an additional supply item. Sanctuary and Odyssey are direct-stick products that don't use underlay. Check each product page on the WFA website for the recommended underlay for your specific range.
What does P3 slip rating mean and why does it matter?
P3 is a slip-resistance classification under Australian Standard AS 4586. It indicates the surface is suitable for wet barefoot areas such as bathrooms, laundries and pool surrounds. If a range in this guide does not list a P3 rating (for example, Streamline or Haven), it may still be used in kitchens, but you should confirm suitability for bathrooms with your installer before purchase.
How do I work out how many boxes I need to order?
Every product page on the WFA website includes a box calculator that adds an allowance for waste and rounds up to whole boxes — flooring is sold by the full box, not by the square metre. There is also a free multi-room Room Planner tool on the site if you are ordering for several spaces at once. Freight cost is calculated live at checkout based on the weight of your order.
