Hybrid vs laminate flooring: which is better?

4 min read · Written by the WFA flooring team · Updated June 2026

Quick answer

Hybrid is 100% waterproof, so it's the safer pick for kitchens, laundries and bathrooms and for homes with pets or kids. Laminate is water-resistant rather than waterproof, but it has a harder, more scratch-resistant surface and a more realistic timber look for the money. Both click together as floating floors, and on our site both start from about $25/m².

Choose hybrid if…

You want one floor right through the house, including wet areas. Hybrid's rigid waterproof core won't swell if water sits on it, and most boards have an acoustic underlay already attached, so installation is quick.

It's also a little softer and quieter to walk on, which suits apartments and families.

Choose laminate if…

You want the toughest surface for the price. Quality laminate (AC4–AC5 rating) shrugs off chair legs, dog claws and high heels better than most hybrids, and thicker 12 mm boards feel more solid underfoot.

Keep it out of bathrooms and laundries, and wipe up spills promptly.

What about cost?

Board prices overlap. The real difference is usually installation: hybrids with attached underlay skip a step. Use the coverage calculator on any product page to see exact boxes and total cost for your room.
